WCRB-FM
Signs for Arbitron Portable People MeterTM Ratings
Service in Boston
NEW YORK,
January 3, 2007 – Arbitron Inc. (NYSE: ARB)
announced today that WCRB-FM, Boston’s heritage classical
radio station at 99.5 FM recently acquired by Nassau Broadcasting
Partners, L.P., has entered into a multi-year agreement for
Arbitron’s radio ratings services that include Portable
People MeterTM audience measurement services when deployed
in Boston.
Nassau’s Sr. Executive Vice President Tristram Collins
commented, “WCRB is poised to enhance the value of
our audiences in the eyes of our advertisers through PPM
ratings. Advertisers and agencies are demanding a better
way to buy radio with better data and more accountability
for their investments. In signing for the PPM service in
Boston, we can demonstrate to the decision-makers that radio
can do an excellent job targeting the appropriate audiences.”
“We are pleased that WCRB has embraced the Portable
People Meter as an investment in better measurement for radio,” said
Carol Hanley, senior vice president, Sales, Arbitron. “We
have worked hard to demonstrate that, for today and for the
foreseeable future, the Portable People Meter is the ideal
programming and sales tool."
The Portable People Meter, an electronic audience measurement
technology that has been in U.S. market trials since 2001,
is scheduled to be used in the top 50 markets in place
of the current paper and pencil diary method that the company
has employed to collect radio audience estimates since
1965.
About the Portable People Meter
The Arbitron
Portable People Meter system uses a passive audience measurement
device – about the size of a small
cell phone – to track consumer exposure to media and
entertainment, including broadcast, cable and satellite television;
terrestrial, satellite and online radio as well as cinema
advertising and many types of place-based electronic media.
Carried throughout the day by randomly selected survey participants,
the PPM device can track when and where they watch television,
listen to radio as well as how they interact with other forms
of media and entertainment.
In its current form, the PPM detects inaudible codes embedded
in the audio portion of media and entertainment content delivered
by broadcasters, content providers and distributors. The
company is field testing an enhanced version of the meter
that can also collect audio signatures for any radio station,
which are later matched to signatures collected by an in-market
monitoring system.
At the end of the day, the meter is placed in a docking
station that extracts the codes and signatures and sends
them to a central computer. The PPM is equipped with a motion
sensor, a patented quality control feature unique to the
system, which allows Arbitron to confirm the compliance of
the PPM survey participants every day.
